Factoring the time spent on research by artist Eric Heath, plus his time to paint each of the 351 images depicted, plus gallery time to scan and process the images, compose, proof, index and fine tune this plate, we estimate this plate represents over 3,000 hours of work.
Each of the 351 species depicted is discretely numbered with the indexed common name for each painting listed at the bottom of the print forming an artwork perhaps without equal in the world.

Māori have a long association with whales and names for the different species of whales vary from tribe to tribe. One of the old terms for whales was 'ika moana' or fish of the sea. Legend has it that the tribal ancestor 'Paikea' rode on a whale named Tohorā to New Zealand after his canoe sank on the voyage from the ancestral home of Hawaiiki.

Plate 261 Manaia - The Seahorse Montage
The Manaia is a mythological creature in Māori culture and the traditional name for the Seahorse, the title given to 54 species of marine fish in the genus Hippocampus. The word 'Hippocampus' comes from the Ancient Greek 'hippos' meaning 'horse' and 'kampos' meaning 'sea monster'
The Manaia is traditionally believed to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits and is a symbol used as a guardian against evil. The earliest known seahorse fossils date back about 13 million years.
The male seahorse is equipped with a brood pouch and when mating, the female seahorse deposits up to 1,500 eggs in the male's pouch. The male then carries the eggs for 9 to 45 days until the seahorses emerge.

Tipa is the Māori name for the Scallop (Pecten novaezelandiae). Scallop means mollusc and Sea Shells of New Zealand Aotearoa has been composed from 58 original paintings of more common New Zealand sea shell species by artist Eric Heath and presented in the shape of a scallop. Each of the 58 paintings depicted is discretely numbered with the indexed common and scientific name for each painting listed at the bottom of the print.

Plate 214: Tahatai means 'Sea Shore Life' in the Māori language. This compilation of 88 detailed original paintings is of a myriad of species that inhabit the New Zealand coastal tidal zone. Composed from the original paintings by Eric Heath painted between 1960 and 1988 and presented in a scientific style reminiscent of the style of an ichthyological plate from the journals from the great voyages of discovery from the 18th & 19th centuries. All 88 species are discretely numbered and identified with both the common and scientific names at the bottom of the print.
