Plate 351 Nga Tini A Tangaroa

Plate 351 Nga Tini A Tangaroa combines a myriad of species paintings to form a uniquely spectacular and provocative symbol of the diversity of marine life in our oceans.

Factoring the time spent on research by artist Eric Heath, plus his time to paint each of the 351 images depicted, plus gallery time to scan and process the images, compose, proof, index and fine tune this plate, we estimate this plate represents over 3,000 hours of work.

Māori have a long association with whales and names for the different species of whales vary from tribe to tribe. One of the old terms for whales was 'ika moana' or fish of the sea. Legend has it that the tribal ancestor 'Paikea' rode on a whale named Tohorā to New Zealand after his canoe sank on the voyage from the ancestral home of Hawaiiki.

Plate 263 Ika Moana the Whale tail montage is composed from no less than 132 New Zealand marine life paintings by Eric Heath and is supplied with a separate species identification key with both the common and scientific names of all 132 species depicted

Plate 261 Manaia - The Seahorse Montage

The Manaia is a mythological creature in Māori culture and the traditional name for the Seahorse, the title given to 54 species of marine fish in the genus Hippocampus. The word 'Hippocampus' comes from the Ancient Greek 'hippos' meaning 'horse' and 'kampos' meaning 'sea monster'
The Manaia is traditionally believed to be the messenger between the earthly world of mortals and the domain of the spirits and is a symbol used as a guardian against evil. The earliest known seahorse fossils date back about 13 million years.

The male seahorse is equipped with a brood pouch and when mating, the female seahorse deposits up to 1,500 eggs in the male's pouch. The male then carries the eggs for 9 to 45 days until the seahorses emerge.

Fish Art Plate 261 Manaia Seahorse montage is an open edition print composed from 140 different marine life paintings by Eric Heath, each having been scanned from the original, remastered then arranged with meticulous attention to detail and is supplied with a separate species identification key with both the common and scientific names of all 140 species depicted, including a Seahorse, perhaps doubling this prints anti-evil power . . . .
